Staking schrijvers treft ook talkshows (Update)

Wellicht dat jullie de laatste tijd het één en ander gehoord hebben over een mogelijke staking van schrijvers van TV en film.
De kogel is nu door de kerk; de staking gaat plaatsvinden vanaf maandag 5 november 2007. Het is niet bekend tot wanneer de staking zal duren.
De vakbond van schrijvers wil meer geld zien. Tot deze vakbond (Writers Guild of America, WGA) behoren niet alleen script schrijvers voor film, maar ook voor televisieseries en andere vormen van entertainment. Omdat de huidige CAO op 31 oktober afliep, vonden er de laatste tijd onderhandelingen plaats over het nieuwe contract.
De reden van de staking is dat de WGA graag meer royalties ziet op nieuwe media. Hierbij kan gedacht worden aan de verkoop van DVD maar ook aan de online verkoop van media, bijvoorbeeld via iTunes of andere vormen van digitale distributie.
De huidige CAO was gebaseerd op een oude regeling die stamt uit de jaren '80. Door ontwikkelingen uit de laatste decennia's op het gebied van home entertainment voelen de schrijvers dat er oneerlijkheid bestaat over de opbrengsten van de verkoop.
Een eis van de vakbond is onder andere dat de royalties van het huidige $0.04 per verkochte DVD wordt verhoogd naar $0.08. De producenten (voornamelijk grote studio's en mediaconglomeraten) tegen wie de WGA staakt, zien dit echter niet zitten. Daarom is een staking voor onbepaalde tijd in het leven geroepen.
Het effect van de staking zullen het eerst en hardst aankomen bij onze geliefde (late night) talkshows. Deze shows zijn afhankelijk van schrijvers die direct kunnen inspringen op de actualiteiten. Het schrijven van monologen, sketches en andere grappen gebeurt op dagelijkse basis. Door de staking kan dit niet meer plaatsvinden.
Enkele talkshowhosts hebben in hun show al aangegeven dat er nog onduidelijkheid bestond op het moment van de uitzendingen van deze week, en dat ze daarom niet met zekerheid konden zeggen of men de week erop te zien waren.
Welke shows gewoon door zullen gaan en welke shows voor onbepaalde tijd zullen stoppen is nog niet helemaal bekend, echter kan nu met enige zekerheid gezegd worden dat in ieder geval The Tonight Show tot de shows behoort die door de staking de komende periode niet te zien zal zijn. Volgens berichtgevingen zullen waarschijnlijk ook The Daily Show en The Colbert Report volgen indien de staking zou plaatsvinden.
Overigens is dit niet de eerste keer dat de WGA gestaakt heeft. In 1988 vond er een staking plaats die in totaal 22 weken duurde.

Omdat alle presentatoren en/of teams van schrijvers lid zijn van de WGA, zullen de volgende shows per direct stoppen:
- The Late Show with David Letterman
- The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
- Late Night with Conan O'Brien
- The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
- The Colbert Report (with Stephen Colbert)
Er zullen de komende weken in ieder geval herhalingen worden uitgezonden. Vermoedelijk zal dit duren totdat de staking voorbij is en het werk weer opgepakt wordt.
Voor alle duidelijkheid mag een schrijver niet werken wanneer de WGA staakt. Doet hij/zij dit wil kan het lidmaatschap ontnomen worden.

 English summary: The effects of the strike by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which represents writers for TV and film, will also channel through to talkshows and other television shows. This strike will start on Monday the 5th of November and will continue indefinitely.
The reason for the strike is that the WGA wants more royalties on the sales of new media, for example DVD's and online digital distribution. The current union contract is based on that of the 80s, in which home entertainment sales as we know today are not taken into account. The writers feel that they have not been properly compensated ever since. The studios and mediaconglomerates, to which the WGA is aiming the strike, want to hear none of this.
Talkshows rely heavily on writers for monologues, sketches and jokes on a daily basis and will most probably take the hit first and hardest. Some talkshowhost have addressed the issue on their show in which they explain that they weren't sure if they will return the following week.
How the situation for the talkshows stands as of now is unclear, however The Tonight Show is one of the shows that will not be appearing for the time being. According to sources The Daily Show and The Colbert Report would possibly follow suit if the strike would come through.
This isn't the first time the writers union has organized a strike. In 1988 the WGA held a strike that lasted 22 weeks.

Reruns will be broadcast in the coming weeks. This will most likely continue until the strike is over and work will be resumed.
To make things clear, a writer is not allowed to work if the WGA is on strike. If he/she does so, membership might be taken away.
