Onderhandelingen schrijversstaking opnieuw gestopt

English It seems that the negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the AMPTP have broken down yet again. The two parties are not willing to make a deal under the current proposals of both sides.

The strike will continue, however what the next step will be is unclear. What we can make of all this is that it's highly likely that the strike will not be over before the end of this year, which possibly means that there will be no shows with Christmas or New Year...

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Talks between striking screenwriters and Hollywood producers broke down again Friday, with the two sides blaming each other for failure to reach compromise.

Neither the Writers Guild of America nor the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers indicated when the talks could resume.

"We're disappointed to report that talks between the AMPTP and WGA have broken down yet again," the AMPTP said in a statement. "Quite frankly, we're puzzled and disheartened by an ongoing WGA negotiating strategy that seems designed to delay or derail talks rather than facilitate an end to this strike."

The screenwriter union said the producers came back to the negotiating table with a proposal that included a total rejection of writers' offers made in earlier talks and demanded that the union give up on some of its key demands.

"We reject the idea of an ultimatum," said WGA Negotiating Committee Chairman John Bowman. "Although a number of items we have on the table are negotiable, we cannot be forced to bargain with ourselves."

The union said the producers wanted it to concede most of its Internet revenue sharing proposal as a precondition for continued bargaining.

It insisted it could not accept this approach, but expressed willingness to resume negotiations "no matter how intransigent" the bargaining partners are.

"We were prepared to counter their proposal tonight, and when any of them are ready to return to the table, we're here, ready to make a fair deal," Bowman said.

The producers argued that the union wanted to make membership in the WGA mandatory for working in this industry.

"It is now absolutely clear that the WGA's organizers are determined to advance their own political ideologies and personal agendas at the expense of working writers and every other working person who depends on our industry for their livelihoods," the AMPTP said.

The writer strike, launched on November 5, has forced the shutdown of numerous popular television shows like "Desperate Housewives" and "24," forcing networks to broadcast reruns in their place.

Film productions also have been set back, with a new Tom Hanks film, "Angels and Demons" and an upcoming Oliver Stone war movie "Pinkville," both shelved because of the strike.

Writers walked off the job after the producers association rejected their demands for a greater share of profits from Internet and new media sales.

It is the first strike by the writers' union in Hollywood in nearly 20 years, and has seen picket lines in front of various studios around Los Angeles.

FilmLA Inc, a non-profit group that handles film permits and promotes the industry, has estimated that the strike will cause losses of around 21.3 million dollars a day if it extends far into December.

i dont know if I should be happy or sad. On one hand, im really happy to get even more old shows of leno, but on the other hand, is that he only got one more year left, so it is sad that we are missing his shows.

damn why is it so hard to strike a deal... if teh writers are payed a fixed amount "per line", meaning for how much writing they actually do, then nothing changed with interwebs. if they're payed a percentage of the income then again nothing's really changed - income is income, whether it comes from traditional media, interwebs or mars for that matter. so this really shouldn't be that hard to solve, unless someone's trying to get more than their share, but which part is it that's not being reasonable i don't know.
